Three Tips for Practical Bathroom Lighting
If you’re like most home renovators, the thought of bathroom design likely brings to mind images of updated vanities, mirrors, flooring, and tubs. But an equally important component of any successful remodel is the concept of bathroom lighting.
How to Choose the Perfect Bathroom Lighting
If you’re like most home renovators, the thought of bathroom design likely brings to mind images of updated vanities, mirrors, flooring, and tubs. But an equally important component of any successful remodel is the concept of bathroom lighting.
Your groggy, middle-of-the-night bathroom trip may not require much light, but you most definitely can’t get ready in the morning by feeling your way around. Keep these key bathroom lighting tips in mind for the perfect washroom remodel.
1. Layered lighting is critical, even in the bathroom.
While it stands to reason that kitchen lighting design tips would call for different types of lighting, this may not seem so obvious when it comes to the bathroom. Overhead lights alone can cause glare and lead to bumping into things on that midnight bathroom run. Lighting under the toe kick of the vanity, however, can provide a path of light for late-night emergencies.
Similarly, designers often recommend including task lighting to the sides of the mirror to allow for proper visibility and favorable lighting when getting ready. Such lights should have frosted glass shades or include some sort of etched design to cut down on glare.
Finally, a task light for the shower allows for additional visibility in the tub. As we spend more time on self-care activities in the bathroom, dimmable accent lights allow for the perfect, spa-like atmosphere.
2. Avoid Asymmetrical and Direct Down-Lighting
Light directly overhead will result in a harsh, unflattering view in the mirror. Position overhead lights to illuminate your walkway so that you’re lit from behind when looking in the mirror. While task lighting to the sides of the mirror can also help alleviate this harshness, adding a light on only one side will negate the effect. Be sure to keep lighting symmetrical for even illumination.
3. Choose the Right Light Bulbs
Crisp, white light portrays skin tones most accurately. When deciding what type of bulb to use for bathroom lighting, LED is an excellent way to go. Not only do LED lights save energy and last for years, but they also provide a more clean–lined, modern look in the bathroom. Today’s LED lights provide a warmer light than previous technology, providing a more natural, cohesive look when combining with incandescent bulbs.
Remember to include bathroom lighting in your remodel planning and you’re sure to achieve the relaxing, functional space you have in mind.
