Some projects come together beautifully, while others take on a life of their own. This remodel proved to be one of those special collaborations.

This kitchen remodel on the northside of Muncie involved a full transformation for homeowners Bob and Ashley Runkle. From the beginning, it was clear this wasn’t going to be a typical renovation. Ashley, an artist and muralist, brought a strong creative vision to the table. She has an incredible eye for design, texture, and detail – and that influence is felt in every corner of the space.

Collaboration is what made this project truly successful, though. We paired Ashley’s creativity with the expertise of Delaney’s Construction, a contractor known for handling large-scale renovations. We are grateful Delaney’s Construction brought us in to help with the design and for facilitation, and because of their capabilities, we weren’t just limited to surface-level updates – we were able to completely rethink the layout. And that is exactly what happened…

Trading Spaces – The Kitchen and Living Room Swapped

We relocated the kitchen itself, moving it into what had previously been underutilized living space. By removing walls and reworking the structure, we opened up the home and created a much more functional and inviting environment. The new layout flows naturally, giving the kitchen the presence it deserves while enhancing the surrounding living areas.

One of the standout additions is the butler’s pantry – tucked just beyond the main kitchen, offering both function and a bit of separation. The transition into that space is intentional and memorable. A softly curved archway, finished with richly textured, variegated tile, draws you in. It’s one of those details that not only adds visual interest but creates a sense of movement through the home.

In the main kitchen, we carried that same attention to detail throughout. The custom hood serves as a true focal point, echoing the arch motif and extending down toward the countertop. Inside, it’s lined with granite – both a practical choice for easy cleaning and a subtle design detail that elevates the entire feature.

We incorporated a mix of finishes to keep the space layered and interesting, while still feeling cohesive. Glass-front cabinetry provides a place to display meaningful family pieces, adding a personal touch. The warm wood flooring contrasts beautifully with the cabinetry, grounding the space and making it feel inviting and lived-in.

An apron-front sink anchors the kitchen with a timeless, welcoming feel – one of those elements that’s both functional and emotionally resonant.

Ashley’s artistic influence shows up in so many thoughtful ways. She sourced a vintage window from out of state and we incorporated it between the kitchen and pantry, adding character and a sense of history. She also selected unique lighting elements and other charming touches that added personality and warmth.

At the end of the day, this project is a great example of what can happen when everyone brings their strengths to the table. Ashley’s vision pushed the design in creative and unexpected ways, Delaney Brothers made the structural transformation possible, and together we were able to create a space that feels both highly functional and deeply personal.

It’s not just a kitchen – it’s a reflection of the people who live there.
